Back to Home Page & News Index

Proud winners of the environmental awareness campaign with their
teacher Ms. Cusack.

Four Transition Year students, Pamela Corrigan, Bernadette Reilly, Patricia Campbell and Laura Stalidzane were successfully crowned winners of the Environmental Awareness Campaign held by Abbott Laboratories, Cootehill. The aim of the campaign was to promote awareness of the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The competition was open to all Transition Year students in Cavan and Monaghan.

The girls decided to promote the recycling of used mineral cans. In researching they noticed that most recycling bins were dull and unattractive. Their idea was to construct a colourful, attractive bin for recycling cans out of used mineral cans. They constructed a sample bin for the competition. Abbott was very impressed with this unique, original, creative and innovative idea.

After a great presentation by the group, they were deservingly crowned the winners and were presented with a top of the range HP computer for the school, certificates and travel bags.

Abbott was so impressed with the idea that they requested a full-scale model of the winning idea for use in their factory. This is currently under construction in the Science Room with their teacher Ms. Cusack.
